Volunteer
Who Can Volunteer?
Anyone age 14 or older is welcome to volunteer with us. More than 100 people volunteer their time to the Breakfast Program, many of whom come from outside the church. Some have been part of the Breakfast Program for many years while others begin their first experience in community service with us. Some volunteer on a regular basis, often weekly, and others as their schedules allow.
How Can I Get Involved?
There are a number of ways you can help. We have opportunities for volunteers in the early morning, seven days a week, as well as occasional projects later in the day.
Help us set up and serve breakfast.
Every morning, two volunteers arrive at St. Andrew’s at 6:30 to prepare the hot food and begin setting up the dining room. Seven more volunteers arrive at 7 a.m. to set up the serving stations, serve food, socialize with our guests, wash dishes and clean up the kitchen. Volunteers complete their tasks around 9 a.m. and go on with the rest of their day.
Help us prepare food.
Some of the food we serve in the morning needs to be prepared in advance. And sometimes we receive donations of fresh food from Food Gatherers that needs to be cleaned, cut up and cooked or frozen for later. If you enjoy cooking and food prep (or would like to learn) consider joining us for an afternoon food prep session. We typically work for two hours, although the times are flexible.
Help us keep our space clean and organized.
We work out of the commercial kitchen at St. Andrew’s Church, and we rely on a team of volunteers to help us keep our work space clean and organized. In addition, we regularly receive clothing donations for our guests that need to be sorted and organized. If you enjoy cleaning and organizing while hanging out with a great group of people, please consider joining one of our work sessions.
